I literally just found out about this website today. I am also having a hard time comprehending what is actually going on here. Like how do you post an ask vs show?
"Show HN: Title_of_Post" with a URL to the site to post a Show HN article. Should be "something you've made that other people can play with."
"Ask HN: Title_of_Post" with a question written in the "text" section to post a Ask HN article. Should be a text based question for the community (much like this article currently being commented on).

One feature that's not included in the lists some people have made that I find helpful occasionally is the "by: username" in the Search feature which will find comments and submissions (filterable by Ask, Show, Launch, Job, Poll) by a specific author.
