Downvotes are often capricious, including on HN.

At the end of the day it's just numbers in a database somewhere.

It's actually kind of surprising how seriously people take it. I can easily imagine someone saying to the inventor of downvotes: "Yeah but what happens if people just... ignore the number? Why would anyone actually give a crap?"

Yes, normally, I just ignore it, too. But today I feel a bit different. Sorry for the sentimental note.

Merry christmas total stranger on the internets <3

Thank you for your time. A very Merry Christmas to you.

Merry Christmas -- hope you feel better!

Much appreciated! Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas.

Some of the best conversations I've seen on HN were when someone was being downvoted to light gray and still making their point carefully and at length, not at all inhibited by the dogpiling.

And so where, inevitably, some of the worst.

As someone already pointed out, my comment was unnecessary. In the spur of the moment, I blurted out what I was thinking. I'm surprised because I didn't notice anything about the writing style. None of the read-aloud software bothered to mention the capitalization, which is good so.

Merry Christmas to all!
