US metropolitan areas by median population density (github.com/scythe)

Love the octile idea. How hard would this be to expand to the top 100 metro areas? I would like to see comparisons to Texas and Florida metros specifically.

Not hard at all -- any metro can be added to the analysis by altering the file cbsas_of_interest.txt with the CBSA code and a preferred city name. The CBSA codes are easy to find by searching in msas_fips_counties.csv: Orlando is 36740, Jacksonville is 27260, Austin is 12420, San Antonio is 41700.

Note that the first line after each city is the total population (a sanity check); the octiles follow.

Got it. Which tool did you use to visualize this?

I considered various fit-for-purpose tools before I gave up and used Excel. Once I had the results I just wanted a graph as soon as I could.
